What modern aircraft comes the closest to the C-46?
      #564 - 15/07/2010 05:58

It doesn't have to be a tail dragger. I'm looking to see if there is a modern equivalent to the capabilities of the C-46. Cargo capacity, beefiness, strength, payload, cold weather operations, etc. Or maybe an aircraft that is roughly the same size but can do these things better? Just curious. Thanks.

Overall, the C-46 had been successful in its primary role as a wartime cargo transport, and had benefited from a series of improvements. Like the C-47/DC-3, the C-46 seemed destined for a useful career as a postwar civilian passenger airliner, and was considered for that purpose by Eastern Airlines. However, the high operating costs of the C-46, soon caused most operators to change their minds.
