Buzz Aldrin among the judges at glorious Goodwood

September 27, 2009
Forty years after he walked on the Moon, former astronaut Buzz Aldrin visited the Goodwood Revival — the world's biggest historic motorsport meeting — in West Sussex on September 20, as a judge in the third annual Freddie March Spirit of Aviation concours for pre-1967 aircraft.

Mark Rijkse won the trophy for his Bücker Jungmeister G-BVGP, recently restored by Personal Plane Services at Booker. Second place went to Cessna 195 N3064B, a 2007 Oshkosh award winner, owned by Essex-based Andrew Wood, and Nigel Pickard's Spartan 7W Executive NC17615 was third.

Among other aerial activity at the Revival were displays from Vickers Vimy replica NX71MY (probably its final appearance), Avro Lancaster PA474 and Avro Vulcan XH558, the first (and only) time World War One, World War Two and Cold War bombers have ever been seen airborne at a single event.
